Overview
The Pipe Portal is a prefabricated system for bringing pipes, conduit and lines up through a roof. Instead of flashing each pipe on its own, the pipes pass through a single raised curb. The curb is flashed into the roof membrane, and a rubber cap clamped to the top of the curb seals around each pipe.
The system takes pipes from 0.375 in. up to 12 in. in diameter and is designed to let the pipes move both vertically and horizontally without breaking the seal. It has three parts:
- an 18-gauge galvanized steel roof curb;
- a laminated, acrylic-coated ABS plastic curb cover with a collared opening;
- an EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) cap that is compression molded with stepped nipples, one for each pipe.
Portals Plus, part of the DuraVent Group, makes Pipe Portal systems for low-slope roof systems of any membrane type. The curb is flashed with the same membrane as the roof, following that membrane manufacturer's details.
The five versions share the same curb styles and cover design. They differ in the cap model, the collar size of the cover and the number and size of pipes each cap takes: the C-126, C-212, C-412 and C-481 caps fit the 8-in. collar, and the C-182 cap fits the 14-in. collar.
Roof curbs
Each curb is 18-gauge galvanized steel with an integral base plate and continuously welded corner seams. It comes with a wood nailer and a layer of 1.5-in., 3-lb. rigid fiberglass insulation, both installed at the factory. Three curb styles suit different roof decks:
- RC-2A, straight-sided: for decks with lightweight fill or tapered insulation. It is 11 in. high, and also made 18 in. high.
- RC-3A, canted: for non-insulated decks, 8 in. high.
- RC-4A, raised canted: for decks with rigid insulation, 9 1/2 in. high.
Each style is made in a small size, which takes the 8-in. collared cover, and a large size, which takes the 14-in. collared cover.
The small curb measures 12 in. across the outside, with a 9-in. opening inside the 1.5-in. insulation. The large curb measures 20 in. across the outside, with a 17-in. opening. On the canted RC-3A and RC-4A styles the sloped base flange extends 4 in. beyond the curb wall.

Curb cover and caps
The curb cover is laminated, acrylic-coated ABS plastic. It has pre-punched holes for fastening it to the curb and a molded sealing ring around a raised collar. On the small cover the collar opening is 8 in.; on the large cover it is 14 in.
The EPDM cap fits over the collar and is held by Portals Plus Snaplock stainless-steel clamps. Each cap model is molded for a set number and size of pipes:
- C-126: one penetration from 2 to 6 in. in diameter.
- C-212: up to two pipes from 0.375 to 1 in. and two pipes from 1 to 2 in.
- C-412: up to four pipes from 1 to 2 in.
- C-481: up to four pipes from 0.375 to 1 in.
- C-182: pipes from 8 to 12 in., on the large cover with the 14-in. collar.
Each nipple is stepped, so it can be cut at the step that matches the pipe's diameter. All step dimensions are the inside diameters of the conical nipples:
- C-481: 0.65 to 0.90 in., 0.97 to 1.10 in. and 1.275 to 1.375 in.
- C-212: the same three steps, 0.65 to 0.90 in., 0.97 to 1.10 in. and 1.275 to 1.375 in., on the nipples for the smaller pipes, and 1.30 to 1.70 in., 1.80 to 2.00 in. and 2.25 to 2.40 in. on the nipples for the 1- to 2-in. pipes.
- C-412: 1.30 to 1.70 in., 1.80 to 2.00 in. and 2.25 to 2.40 in.
- C-126: five stages, giving 2.35 to 3.00 in., 3.40 to 4.20 in., 4.40 to 4.60 in., 5.50 to 5.60 in. and 6.50 to 6.65 in.
- C-182: 8.062 to 8.625 in., 10.062 to 10.750 in. and 12.062 to 12.750 in.
One cap is selected for each curb base. The C-212 cap is made in black and in white; the other caps are black.
Adapters let structural steel pass through the same system. They are made for angle iron in 1-, 1.75-, 3- and 4-in. sizes and for 3- and 4-in. square tube.
Cover and cap dimensions
The small cover, used with the C-126, C-212, C-412 and C-481 caps, is 14 in. across its base and 4 in. high, with an 8-in. collar. The large cover, used with the C-182 cap, is 22.75 in. across its base and 4 in. high, with a 14-in. collar.
The C-212 cap stands 2.5 in. above its 1.5-in. base section. The C-182 cap is 4.5 in. tall overall, with its three steps at heights of 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 in.
Specification wording
The specification text for each version calls for an 18-gauge galvanized roof curb, model RC-__A, with integral base plate, continuously welded corner seams, a factory-installed wood nailer and 1.5-in., 3-lb. rigid fiberglass insulation. It calls for a laminated, acrylic-coated ABS plastic curb cover with pre-punched holes and a molded sealing ring on an 8-in. or 14-in. collared opening, and an EPDM compression-molded cap with Portals Plus' stainless-steel Snaplock clamp or clamps. Attachment and installation follow the Portals Plus instructions and the roofing membrane manufacturer's recommendations.
- C-182: pipes 8 to 12 in. in diameter, on the 14-in. collared opening.
- C-212: up to two pipes 0.375 to 1 in. and two pipes 1 to 2 in., on the 8-in. collared opening.
- C-412: up to four pipes 1 to 2 in., on the 8-in. collared opening.

Installation
The installation runs in six steps:
- The parts are checked so every component is on hand.
- The curb is set on the deck and flashed into the roof following the roof membrane manufacturer's recommendations. The curb cover is then slipped over the pipes and seated on the curb.
- The cover is nailed or screwed to the curb through its pre-punched holes.
- For each pipe, the step on the rubber cap that matches its diameter is chosen, and the nipple is cut off just above that step's index ring.
- The cap is slipped down over the pipes onto the collar and pressed around its edge until it is seated over the collar's beaded ring.
- The stainless-steel clamp is fitted around the rubber at the collar and tightened.
The rubber cap seals the penetration but is not meant to support the pipes, which are carried by their own supports.
