Relevant manufacturer history
Fiber cement dates to 1894 in Vöcklabruck, Austria, where Ludwig Hatschek developed it. He registered his patent for the production of fiber cement roof panels in Austria in 1899. One of the first fiber cement production facilities was established in Niederurnen, Switzerland, in 1903, and the company has over 120 years of business history.
Swisspearl began replacing asbestos in its production in the 1980s. In 2022 Swisspearl Group AG took over Cembrit, a Danish fiber cement maker, which created a company of about 2,600 employees and made the group the number two fiber cement producer in Europe. Swisspearl Group AG operates the Eternit and Swisspearl brands.
The group remains a family business headquartered in Niederurnen, in the Swiss canton of Glarus.
