BLAZER Bi-Metal Stainless Steel Screws

BLAZER bi-metal screws are self-drilling screws for fastening through-panels to steel. The head and threads are made of 304 stainless steel. The drill point is hardened carbon steel welded to the body. The screw drills and taps the steel itself, and sizes are available that drill and tap steel up to 1/2 in thick. They suit metal roof replacement with exposed-fastener panels, where the stainless head sits in the weather.

The line covers #12-14 and 1/4-inch diameters. Drill points run from DP1 to DP5 for different steel thicknesses. The #12 screws are plated with zinc and wax. The 1/4 in screws are plated with zinc and a TRI-SEAL topcoat. A BOND-SEAL sealing washer is available: 15MM OD, 304SS stainless steel backing bonded to non-conductive EPDM.

Sizes and drill points

  • #12-14 DP1: 1 in long; drills and taps up to 0.090 in of steel
  • #12-14 DP2: 1 to 2 in long; 1 in length drills 0.047 to 0.118 in, 2 in length drills 0.059 to 0.118 in
  • #12-14 DP3: 1 to 2 in long; drills and taps 0.059 to 0.236 in of steel with hex washer and T-25 TORX heads; 0.059 to 0.210 in with the #2 square drive head
  • #12-14 DP5: 1-1/2 to 2-1/4 in long; drills and taps 0.157 to 0.472 in of steel
  • 1/4-14 DP2: 1 to 2 in long; drills and taps 0.047 to 0.118 in of steel
  • 1/4-20 DP4: 1-1/8 to 2 in long; drills and taps 0.100 to 0.312 in of steel
  • 1/4-20 DP5: 2 to 4 in long; drills and taps 0.125 to 0.500 in of steel

Choosing the drill point and length

The attachment thickness is measured from the top surface of the fastened material to the underside of the steel that is drilled and tapped, including any void or insulation. It must not exceed the load bearing length of the screw. Add 0.125 in to the printed bearing length for screws with no washer. Use a screw gun with torque control or depth sensing, 2,000 rpm max.

Head, drive and coating

  • Hex washer head, 5/16 in AF on #12-14 screws and 3/8 in AF on 1/4 in screws
  • T-25 TORX button head and pancake head; these need a T-25W TORX wedge bit, part number TB25W
  • #12 pancake head with #2 square drive, TRI-SEAL coated
  • T25 TORX pancake head on #12-14 x 1 DP2
  • Body: 304 stainless steel; drill tip: carbon steel
  • Plating: #12 diameter zinc and wax; 1/4 in diameter zinc with TRI-SEAL topcoat
  • Sealing washer: BOND-SEAL, 15MM OD, 304SS stainless steel backing to non-conductive EPDM; screws are listed with and without washer
