Wood-to-Steel Self-Drilling Screws

BLAZER wood-to-metal screws fasten wood to steel. They drill and tap the steel in one pass, so no pilot hole is needed. The full line of sizes fastens to metal as thin as 18-gauge. One size drills and taps steel up to 1/2 in thick. These screws suit wood nailers and plates set on steel, including the steel framing under an exposed-fastener metal roof.

Heads are countersunk, so the screw can be installed flush to the surface of the wood. The #10 and #12 sizes have wafer countersunk heads with a square recess. The 1/4 in size has a 5/16 in hex countersunk head. The material is C-1022 carbon steel with a TRI-SEAL long-life finish, rated for 1,000 hours of salt spray. The screws are compatible for use in ACQ and fire treated lumber and are produced to SAE J78 specifications. Recommended screw gun speed is 2,000 RPM max.

Choosing the drill point and length

  1. Select a screw based on the thickness of the wood and the thickness of the steel substrate.
  2. For 1/2 to 3/4 in wood: steel up to 0.210 in takes screw A, B or C; steel over 0.210 in takes screw D.
  3. For 3/4 to 1-1/2 in wood: steel up to 0.210 in takes screw E; steel over 0.210 in takes screw F.
