What CLOSE-TITE closure is

CLOSE-TITE closure is a foam closure strip from Triangle Fastener Corporation for metal roof systems. Each strip is cut to match the shape of one metal panel profile. The strip fills the space between the panel and the surface it meets, so the profile is closed at the eave, ridge or other end. Strips are sold for metal roof replacement with corrugated and ribbed panels.

Profiles include 2.67" Corrugated, 2.5" Corrugated and a range of rib profiles. Wheeling Channel Drain, Granite City Strong Panel II, Metal Sales Pro Panel II, 3/4" Hi Rib, Delta Rib, M/U Panel, A-Panel, Metal Sales Span Line 36 RW, R-Panel and McElroy Multi-Rib each have a matching strip.

Most profiles come as an inner closure and an outer closure. Two profiles, 2.67" Corrugated and 2.5" Corrugated, are listed as a single strip. Every carton holds 100 pieces.

Material and construction

The closure is made from specially formulated closed-cell polyethylene foam. A fusing process laminates the foam into a structure like plywood. The lamination gives the strip strength and uniform compressibility.

Many of the closure shapes are available with a dovetail interlocking joint. The joint speeds up installation. It also eliminates the gapping often found with flat end-to-end joints.

Bulk density is 2 pcf. Average cell size is 10 mils. Shore hardness is 7 on the AA scale and 51 on the 00 scale. Thermal conductivity is 0.25 BTU-in./hr.-Ft.2-°F.

Profiles and sizes

Each profile is listed with the pitch of the corrugation, the height of the corrugation, the length of one strip and the footage in one carton.

  • Pitch 2.67", height 1/2", strip length 24" and 200 ft per carton for 2.67" Corrugated
  • Pitch 6", height 1/2", strip length 36" and 300 ft per carton for Wheeling Channel Drain, inner and outer
  • Pitch 2.5", height 9/16", strip length 38-3/4" and 323 ft per carton for 2.5" Corrugated
  • Pitch 9", height 5/8", strip length 36" and 300 ft per carton for Granite City Strong Panel II, inner and outer
  • Pitch 9", height 5/8", strip length 36" and 300 ft per carton for Metal Sales Pro Panel II, inner and outer
  • Pitch 9", height 3/4", strip length 36" and 300 ft per carton for 3/4" Hi Rib, inner and outer
  • Pitch 8", height 3/4", strip length 24" and 200 ft per carton for Delta Rib, inner and outer
  • Pitch 6", height 3/4", strip length 36" and 300 ft per carton for M/U Panel, inner and outer
  • Pitch 12", height 1-1/8", strip length 36" and 300 ft per carton for A-Panel, inner and outer
  • Pitch 12", height 1-1/8", strip length 36" and 300 ft per carton for Metal Sales Span Line 36 RW, inner and outer
  • Pitch 12", height 1-1/4", strip length 36" and 300 ft per carton for R-Panel, inner and outer
  • Pitch 12", height 1-1/4", strip length 36" and 300 ft per carton for McElroy Multi-Rib, inner and outer

The 3/4" Hi Rib closure matches Grand Rib III, Max Rib, Imperial Rib, Classic Rib and Century Drain.

Inner and outer closures

The typical outside closure and the typical inside closure have different shapes. The two shapes are drawn as a pair for each profile.Inner and outer strips for the same profile share the same pitch, height and length. Delta Rib strips are 24" long with 200 ft per carton.

Beveled closure

Beveled closure is made for roofs with unusual cut back angles and valleys. These details are challenging closure applications. A standard 90 degree closure does not give an acceptable fit and seal on them.

Beveled closure is produced in custom bevel configurations. Each configuration takes into account the cut back angles and the roof slope of the individual application.

The parts are custom cut to the panel and to the specific order needs.

Adhesive and installation

Adhesive is a bead of glue. It is applied to either side of the closure configuration.

The adhesive allows secured placement of the closure strip prior to installation of the panel. The strip stays in position while the panel goes on.

Physical performance

Service temperature runs from -100 to +180 °F. Tensile strength is 45-55 psi in the machine direction and 36-44 psi in the cross-machine direction. Elongation at 20 °C is 124-152 percent to break in the machine direction and 100-122 percent in the cross-machine direction. Tear resistance at 20 °C is 10-12 lb./in. in the machine direction.

Compression set after 22 hours at 50% compression, with 24 hours recovery, is 16% of original thickness at most. Compression strength is 4.9-6.1 psi at 25%, 12.7-15.5 psi at 50% and 38.8-47.4 psi at 75%.

Water absorption is 0.04 lbs./sq. ft. at most on a cut surface. Buoyancy is 55.0 lbs./cu. ft. at minimum.

Chemical resistance

Chemical resistance is measured as dimensional change in percent of volume after immersion for 7 days at 68 °F. Distilled water causes no change.

  • Sulfuric acid, 30%: +0.4
  • Nitric acid, 10%: -0.7
  • Hydrochloric acid, 10%: +5.4
  • Carbolic acid, 5%: +5.0
  • Acetic acid, 5%: -0.6
  • Oleic acid: -0.7
  • Citric acid, 10%: +6.5
  • Ethyl alcohol, 95%: +0.4
  • Hydrogen peroxide, 3%: +1.7
  • Caustic soda, 10%: +0.9
  • Sodium carbonate, 2%: +7.4
  • Saline, 10%: +4.0

Solvents cause larger changes. Carbon tetrachloride gives +18.0, heptane 18.5, ethylene disulfide +3.0 and toluene +15.0.
