Identify AEP Span HR-36 before ordering a sheet

HR-36 is AEP Span's named exposed-fastener metal roof and siding panel. The manufacturer describes a trapezoidal section with 36 inches of installed coverage and a one-and-one-half-inch rib height. This page records the straight cross-section on AEP Span's one-page panel-dimensions print, revision 1 dated September 9, 2022. AEP Span still lists HR-36 as a current roof and wall product, and its March 2026 PS165 product sheet repeats the main coverage and height. These dates matter in a repair file: a current product listing confirms the name remains in use, while the dated drawing identifies the specific section callouts being sent for a replacement inquiry.

The photograph shows the Iowa River Gazebo's curved 24-gauge HR-36 roof. Its project description attributes the panels to AEP Span and the crimp curving to Curveline. The image identifies the named product on a building but cannot measure the straight drawing's cross-section or either terminal edge. A request should name AEP Span HR-36, the 2022 revision of its dimension print, the material and gauge on the existing roof, and the location of the replacement within the roof plane. A sheet that looks broadly similar from above may have a different crest flat, pan flat, web angle or nesting edge. Keep a sound full-width sample of the building's metal with the drawing so the fabricator can establish which version is actually installed.

Read the 36-inch cover and 44-degree HR-36 web

The 2022 manufacturer drawing marks 36 inches as coverage across the assembled panel. It shows a 7 3/16-inch horizontal interval between corresponding points at adjacent rib crests, a 2 1/8-inch illustrated crest flat and a 2 1/16-inch illustrated valley flat. The rise from pan to crest is 1 1/2 inches. A 44-degree angle symbol sits at one sloping web rising from the valley toward the next crest. Five visible pitch intervals occupy the nominal three-foot coverage in the section sketch. These are the printed positions and values on AEP Span's drawing; the photograph and the one-page order summary do not add a new measurement to them.

The drawing expressly marks its dimensions approximate. Its 36-inch label is installed or net coverage, not a statement of loose sheet width or coil blank width. The 7 3/16-inch callout spans a particular illustrated rib-to-rib interval, while the 2 1/8-inch and 2 1/16-inch values belong to the indicated crest and pan flats. Do not move one of those numbers to a side-lap tail or assume every terminal fold is shown to a numeric tolerance. The 44-degree callout describes the indicated web, not a complete set of machine bends. The drawing does not state both finished free-edge tails, bend radii or an exact forming allowance. The original one-page ordering sheet preserves the printed geometry and leaves those open dimensions for a measured sample.

Match the material to the actual HR-36 roof

AEP Span's current product listing names steel in 26, 24, 22 and 20 gauge and identifies AZ50 Zincalume steel as its standard base metal. The March 2026 product sheet shows gauge-specific base steel thicknesses and finishes, and it offers 0.040-inch aluminum in named colors as another route. The same sheet lists standard panel lengths from six feet to fifty feet, with shorter cut sheets treated as an option. These are choices within AEP Span's current offering rather than evidence that any older roof was made from the same gauge or finish. A repair request should record the original metal, measured thickness where it can be established, coating, visible color and finish before specifying the replacement.

HR-36 is also sold as siding, and AEP Span offers a reversed configuration for that use. For a roof repair, name the standard roof-facing section and indicate the painted side and side-lap direction shown on the existing sheets. A wall-oriented reversed panel can share the product name yet put the weather face or lap in an unsuitable position for the roof in question. AEP Span lists crimp curving as an option; a curved replacement needs its measured radius, orientation and finished arc length as separate order information. The straight section drawing alone supplies none of those values. Keep any new material specification attached to the proposed supplier's own quote so that the historical roof section is not silently rewritten as a current color or substrate selection.

Connect the profile to its roof support and lap layout

AEP Span publishes a 1:12 minimum recommended roof slope for HR-36. Its installation guide describes use over solid substrates or spaced supports, with the illustrated details covering eaves, gutters, gables, valleys, ridges, sidewalls, endwalls, slope changes and panel end laps. The guide shows the panel as an exposed-fastener roof assembly, so a replacement schedule needs more than a cross-section. Record the actual support type and spacing, roof slope, orientation of the ribs, run from eave to ridge, any existing end-lap position, and the flashing condition that receives each cut end. A valley-cut replacement and an uninterrupted field sheet may have the same section but different finished lengths and installation interfaces.

The 2025 installation guide has a separately named panel-lap detail. Use that roof detail to plan how the replacement length will meet the existing sheet and whether a cut end remains within a trim or closure. The 36-inch cross-section measurement is side-to-side coverage after sheets nest; it says nothing about lengthwise end overlap. Photograph an existing side joint and an existing end joint independently, labeling which piece lies above the other in the water-shedding direction. Record penetrations and curb locations on the same roof sketch. For a larger roof replacement, the built-up metal roof installation service can connect the sheet schedule with support conditions and the interfaces at eaves, ridges and penetrations.

Preserve both free edges for a trial fit

The manufacturer's dimension drawing shows the left and right terminal crests but does not provide a full numeric bend schedule for the two free edges. The 2026 product sheet adds a painted-side lap illustration, useful for identifying the intended weather face and nesting direction. Neither print supplies every tail length, return, corner radius and assembled clearance needed to cut tooling for a roof-to-roof replacement. Mark the left and right edges on a piece taken from a sound field panel, photograph the weather side and underside, and show which edge covers the neighboring sheet. A roof rake offcut may have lost its factory edge, so note whether a photographed end was field-trimmed.

Measure the rib rise, pitch, crest flat, valley flat, overall loose-sheet width and effective width of two nested pieces directly from the sample. Use a ruler normal to the rib run and capture the full profile at a clean square end. A short sample from the proposed roll set should be tested against retained roofing at both side laps and at any closure that will remain in place. Matching an approximate 36-inch cover alone will not show whether the hook, tail and weather face seat correctly. File photographs of the test with the 2022 AEP drawing and the chosen metal quote. If the field sample differs from a printed callout, document the difference rather than silently changing the dated profile record.

Build a usable HR-36 metal-sheet order pack

Send a metal supplier AEP Span's 2022 one-page dimensions, the March 2026 HR-36 sheet, the one-page original ordering summary from this file section, and a full-width piece of the installed roof metal. State 36-inch nominal installed coverage, the illustrated 7 3/16-inch rib interval, 1 1/2-inch rise, 2 1/8-inch crest, 2 1/16-inch valley and 44-degree web. Mark the drawing's approximate-dimension note. Add a roof-plane sketch with every replacement position numbered, finished square-cut length, number of sheets, desired gauge and metal, color or coating, delivery location and any sheet that must be field-trimmed at a valley or gable. Identify the visible face and lap hand on the physical sample.

Ask whether the supplier can furnish AEP Span HR-36, has a matching forming route, or proposes a section that needs trial fitting. Request its own cross-section, finished loose width, calculated installed cover, terminal-edge measurements, material and thickness, available length and a short formed sample. Compare the trial section with the existing roof at both seams before releasing a full production run. A generic industrial rib or R-panel name is insufficient because different manufacturers can use a three-foot coverage with different crest widths, web slopes and edge returns. An agreed order should state the actual supplied section and the observed fit, not just repeat the profile label on a purchase order.

Request GRP or fiberglass as its own formed product

A translucent or opaque GRP sheet for this roof needs a separate material and forming inquiry. AEP Span's March 2026 product sheet lists a matching polycarbonate option. Polycarbonate is a different material and should be named as such; it does not establish that AEP Span supplies an HR-36 fiberglass sheet. For a GRP quotation, send a fiberglass producer the dated AEP metal section, this page's one-page summary and an undamaged full-width roof sample showing both metal side laps. State the opening position, finished length, target installed cover, roof support arrangement, exposure, quantity and desired light transmission or opacity. Identify where fiberglass will meet steel and which edge must overlie the retained metal.

Dipcraft Manufacturing describes corrugated fiberglass panels and accepts an existing profile sketch for custom-shape review. Ask it to compare the HR-36 metal sample with its available molds and state the proposed formed crest, valley, web and both terminal edges. Obtain its own laminate, thickness, color or light-transmission data, support and fastening instructions, achievable sheet length and a short trial section. The steel drawing is a shape reference; the fiberglass maker's product data must describe the GRP part being offered. Test the proposed sheet against the retained roof at both side joints before finalizing size and quantity. Keep the fiberglass quote and the five Texas metal-sheet quotes as distinct paths in the building's replacement record.

For a fiberglass match, request a profile review from Dipcraft Manufacturing custom fiberglass roof-panel inquiry.

Five Texas contacts for a measured metal feasibility quote

Metal Warehouse in Sherman, Xtreme Metals around Flint and Tyler, Quality Metals in the San Antonio area, Lucid Metal Works in Houston, and All Precision Metals in El Paso provide five geographically separate metal forming or roof-panel inquiry contacts. Their published businesses make them practical places to ask about a measured HR-36 replacement. The list does not establish that every shop owns AEP Span's particular 2022 rolls. Send each the same drawings, current product sheet, original one-page summary, roof sketch and physical sample. Ask first whether genuine HR-36 can be obtained for the project, then whether a shop-produced section can be measured and trial-fitted at the actual roof joint.

For comparable metal responses, ask each contact to identify the forming route, proposed section revision, cover after nesting, pitch, rise, crest and valley widths, 44-degree web, both free-edge shapes, metal gauge, coating, maximum length and delivery terms. Request a short sample and record any measured difference from the old roof. A seller of a 36-inch industrial rib panel may supply a sound new roof product while its side lap fails to meet an installed HR-36 sheet; the sample test resolves that issue. Keep the approved section drawing and sample-fit photographs with the completed order. Dipcraft is a separate fiberglass feasibility contact rather than a sixth Texas metal-sheet supplier.

Keep the dated profile and accepted sample together

Archive the September 2022 revision 1 panel-dimensions print with the March 2026 PS165 sheet and the December 2025 installation guide. The first carries the 44-degree web and flat-width callouts; the second records the current named product and metal options; the guide shows roof interfaces and lap orientation. Add the accepted fabricator section, the measured field sample, roof position and installation direction. Label which values were printed by AEP Span and which were measured on the existing building. This lets a later owner distinguish a dated manufacturer geometry from a one-off repair measurement without relying on a distant roof photograph.

If a future AEP drawing changes a callout, retain its date and revision alongside this 2022 sheet instead of replacing the old record. A straight 2022 section does not by itself specify every bend in a curved or field-altered roof panel, and a photographed roof finish does not establish a die shape. Store the short trial piece and its lap-fit result for either a metal or a GRP order. That modest physical archive can answer the most difficult future question: whether a newly quoted sheet actually nests with the old roof on both sides while delivering the intended three-foot installed cover.
