What the FALK SSR 42 is and where it is used

The FALK SSR 42 is an insulated standing seam roof panel. It is a composite panel: a steel face on the weather side, a steel face on the liner side and a foamed-in-place polyisocyanurate (PIR) core between them. The seams are raised and interlocking. The panel is made for exterior applications and goes on commercial, industrial and institutional buildings.

One panel forms the roof surface, the insulation layer and the interior face in a single piece. Installation is rapid compared to conventional construction. Projects built with FALK insulated panels include a 100,000 sq ft distribution center expansion in Grand Rapids. The panel is one of several FALK roof products. Related ones are the RRP 40, a triple trapezoidal profile, and the RDEK 40, a PIR deck with TPO or PVC membranes.

Contractors who work with insulated metal panel roofs and walls will find the SSR 42 in the standing seam group. It is a roof panel only. FALK makes separate wall panels, such as the HFW 40 and the CSW.

Versions and sizes

The SSR 42 comes in four core thicknesses. All four share one panel width of 42 in (1066.3 mm). Thickness is nominal.

  • 3 in: R-value 25.00, U-factor .04, approximate weight 2.33 lbs/sf.
  • 4 in: R-value 33.33, U-factor .03, approximate weight 2.55 lbs/sf.
  • 5 in: R-value 41.67, U-factor .024, approximate weight 2.77 lbs/sf.
  • 6 in: R-value 50.00, U-factor .02, approximate weight 2.99 lbs/sf.

Panel length runs from 10 ft to 82 ft. The 3 in panel has a maximum length of 53 ft. The 4 in, 5 in and 6 in panels use the full range.

Each 1 in step in thickness adds 0.22 lbs/sf of weight and 8.33 to the R-value.

Panel profile and dimensions

The panel has a total width of 44.17 in (1122 mm). The coverage width is 42 in (1066.3 mm), plus 0.5 in for the clip. The weather face and the liner face are formed to different profiles.

The weather-side profile is the SSR Box. The liner-side profile is a Box rib. The profile drawings give these dimensions:

  • SSR Box rib on the weather side: ribs 46 mm wide, 110 mm across, with 9 mm shoulders and a 4 mm rise.
  • Box rib on the liner side: 101 mm across, with 45.7 mm flats, 5 mm shoulders and a 2 mm rise.

Embossing is standard on 24 gauge and 26 gauge steel. Embossing is not available on 22 gauge.

Steel, coatings and finishes

The faces are steel. Weather-side gauges are 24 and 22. Liner-side gauges are 26, 24 and 22. The standard steel thickness is 0.5 mm on the exterior and 0.4 mm on the interior.

Both faces are available with three coating types:

  • Fluropon 70% PVDF
  • SMP
  • PE

The same three coatings are offered on the weather side and on the liner side. Panels are supplied in a variety of colors, and color samples can be requested from FALK.

The core is foamed-in-place polyisocyanurate. FALK tests its PIR panels to ASTM D1621 for compressive strength, with a minimum of 14 psi. Apparent density tested to ASTM D1622 is a minimum of 2.1 lb/ft3. Closed cell content tested to ASTM D6226 is 91.6%. Tensile adhesion tested to ASTM D1623 is a minimum of 25 psi.

Cutbacks, accessories and installation

Panels are ordered with a cutback of 3 in or 6 in. Cutback is an option on this panel.

The accessory range for the SSR 42 is flashings, trim, screws, clips and plates. The 42 in coverage width carries a 0.5 in clip allowance.

FALK publishes an installation guide, 2D and 3D detail libraries, a curb detail and a Revit family for the SSR 42. FALK also offers load and span tables in ASD, LRFD and LSD formats, and a shear load table shared with the RDEK 40 and RRP 40. Structural testing follows ASTM E455, ASTM E72, AISI S907 and ASTM E1592 for gravity and uplift load tests on roof panels.

Thermal performance

The calculated R-value is 8.33 per inch of core. R-values for the SSR 42 are based on ASTM C1363 U-factor results. The four thicknesses give R-values from 25.00 to 50.00 and U-factors from .04 to .02.

Thermal transmission tested to ASTM C518-21 gives a K-factor of .126 BTU-in/hr*ft2*F. Air leakage tested to ASTM 1680-16 on metal roof panel systems is below 0.01 cfm/ft2 (0.1 L/s/m2).

Water penetration tests on exterior metal roof panel systems include ASTM E1646-95, which the panels passed at 12.0 psf (575 Pa) and at 20.0 psf (958 Pa). AAMA 501.1-17 dynamic water penetration was passed at 20.0 psf (958 Pa). ASTM E2140-01 static water pressure head was also passed.

Ratings and approvals

The SSR 42 carries FM Approvals ratings to FM 4880 and FM 4471 in thicknesses of 3 in to 6 in. The FM ratings for the SSR 42 are:

  • Wind uplift rating: 165 psf.
  • Internal fire rating: Class 1.
  • External fire rating: Class A.
  • Hail rating: Severe Hail.
  • Purlin spacings of 3 ft, 5 ft and 8 ft with 14 gauge purlin.

The panel also has a Florida Building Code product approval for structural roof use and a QAI Building Product Listing. FALK holds an IAS accreditation under AC473 for its cold-formed steel components. FALK lists an Environmental Product Declaration for its insulated metal panels, valid 11-8-2024 through 11-7-2029.

The fire testing record for FALK panels includes ASTM E84-21, which gave a flame spread of 25 and smoke developed of 75, a Class A result. UL 1256 Part II tested internal fire exposure for roof deck assemblies. CAN/ULC-S126 and CAN/ULC-S127 are also on the list.

Choosing between the four thicknesses

Thickness sets the thermal value. The 3 in version gives R-25.00 and is the lightest at 2.33 lbs/sf. It is also the only version with a length limit below 82 ft, at 53 ft.

The 4 in version gives R-33.33 at 2.55 lbs/sf. The 5 in version gives R-41.67 at 2.77 lbs/sf. The 6 in version gives R-50.00 at 2.99 lbs/sf and the lowest U-factor, .02.

Gauge options are the same for all four. A 22 gauge face carries no embossing. A 24 gauge or 26 gauge face can be embossed. Finish choices of PVDF, SMP or PE apply to every version.
