Overview

Perma-Tite Double Tapered Coping is the Perma-Tite coping version made for larger wall widths. The cover peaks at the center and slopes down toward both faces, and it snaps over anchor clips fastened to the top of the wall, so no fasteners are exposed on the cover. Covers are supplied in 12-ft. lengths, there is no crimping during installation, and no adhesives are used.

It sits in the same family as the tapered, flat, existing slope and continuous cleat versions, which are listed separately in this library. The double tapered and arched versions are the two in the family that carry no testing and no FM or Miami-Dade approval.

On a parapet, the roof membrane is laid over the top of the wall and the coping covers that termination. Perma-Tite coping is one of the perimeter metal components used to finish low-slope roof assemblies where a wall rises above the roof surface.

Custom-fabricated sizes are available, including radius and specially fabricated pieces.

Wall sizes and face heights

The cover is drawn for walls from 6 in. to 32 in. wide, measured as the actual wall size. A 3/8-in. space is built in to take up variation in the wall.

  • Inside face: 2 1/4 in. minimum, 12 in. maximum.
  • Outside face: 2 1/4 in. minimum, 12 in. maximum.
  • Actual wall size: 6 in. minimum, 32 in. maximum.
  • Cover length: 12 ft.

For Perma-Tite Double Tapered Coping, covers are ordered by stretch-out, the flat width of metal needed to form the profile. On Perma-Tite Double Tapered Coping, category I covers a stretch-out of 0 to 10 in., Category II over 10 to 14 in., Category III over 14 to 22 in., Category IV over 22 to 30 in., Category V over 30 to 46 in. and Category VI over 46 to 70 in.

Oil canning, a visible waviness in flat metal, can occur on larger face heights. For a face height over 8 in., 22-gauge steel or .050-in. or .063-in. aluminum is the recommended cover material.

Cover materials and finishes

Covers are manufactured in five materials:

  • 24-gauge galvanized steel
  • 22-gauge galvanized steel
  • .040-in. aluminum
  • .050-in. aluminum
  • .063-in. aluminum

For Perma-Tite Double Tapered Coping, standard colors are coil-coated and carry a 30-year Kynar 500 finish warranty. On Perma-Tite Double Tapered Coping, ten express colors are offered: Dark Bronze, Bone White, Cityscape, Almond, Medium Bronze, Sandstone, Sierra Tan, Slate Gray, Stone White and Clear Anodized. Mill finish is also available, and custom colors can be ordered.

For Perma-Tite Double Tapered Coping, custom post-coated Kynar 500 colors include a 10-year Kynar 500 finish warranty, and a 20-year warranty is available on request. Anodized finishes carry a 5-year warranty. Coil anodized finishing has no warranty, and post-coat Class 1 batch anodized finishing has a 5-year warranty that can be raised to 10 years for an upcharge.

Anchor clips, splice plates and fasteners

Each anchor clip is 12 in. wide and formed from galvanized steel. The clip is 20-gauge in most of the product material and 24-gauge in one passage. Corrosion-resistant stainless-steel springs are factory-attached to the clips and provide long-term, positive spring loading. Fastening holes are pre-punched and slotted so the clips attach properly to the substrate while allowing thermal movement.

Clip spacing is set by the manufacturer. The installation sequence places the clips at 3 ft. on center, and a 4-ft. on-center spacing also appears for the 12-in. spring clips.

Every joint between cover lengths takes an 8-in.-wide concealed splice plate. Each plate carries two factory-applied strips of non-curing butyl sealant, which seal the joint while allowing the metal to move with temperature change.

All splice plates and fasteners ship with the coping. Fasteners are matched to the substrate named on the order, wood, masonry or metal. When no substrate is given, wood fasteners are provided. On Perma-Tite Double Tapered Coping, fasteners must be corrosion resistant and rated for a minimum 250-lb. pullout force in the substrate being used. Where the wall is finished with EIFS, the face fastener is long enough to penetrate the nailer.

Miters, endcaps and transitions

Corners, ends and wall changes are factory fabricated, so no field fabrication of miters is needed. The standard Double Tapered accessory set is left and right endcaps, inside 90° miters and outside 90° miters. Unless noted otherwise, miters and accessories are made with a non-penetrating quicklock joint and then factory sealed watertight. Welded construction carries a surcharge and needs a minimum material thickness of .050 in.

Further accessories include:

  • inside and outside T miters, in left and right hands;
  • Z coping miters, in right-hand and left-hand versions;
  • step-up miters, with peak and valley miters;
  • the Space Maker outside coping miter;
  • non-90° miters, which have a separate print approval and a measurement worksheet for use without a protractor;
  • straight coping transitions, right and left, with or without capped ends;
  • transition coping miters.

Inside and outside T miter versions for this coping are made in 24-gauge steel and .040-in., .050-in. and .063-in. aluminum. Transitions for existing slope wall conditions use their own separate print approvals.

Installation sequence

The roof membrane is positioned on top of the wall, covering the treated wood nailer or substrate completely, with a minimum of 1/2 in. of excess membrane beyond the nailer where applicable. Miters are installed first. The instructions run in ten steps:

  1. Corner support clips: locate and fasten galvanized corner support clips to the wall.
  2. Miter splice plates and anchor clips: position the splice plate in the center of the anchor clip, then install the splice plate and anchor clip assembly into each end of the miter.
  3. Miter: place the corner assembly into position and secure it at the exposed edge of the anchor clips.
  4. Endcap anchor clips: locate and fasten galvanized anchor clips to the wall with the provided fasteners.
  5. Endcap splice plates: remove the release paper from the factory-applied dual non-curing sealant strips and place the splice plate onto the second anchor clip.
  6. Endcap: hook the outside face of the endcap over the anchor clips and rotate it into place, then engage the rear leg onto the anchor clips by pressing downward until the snap lock occurs.
  7. Anchor clips: locate and fasten galvanized anchor clips to the wall at 3 ft. on center with the provided fasteners.
  8. Splice plates: place a splice plate onto the anchor clips at each splice joint, 12 ft. on center, after removing the release paper from the sealant strips.
  9. Coping: hook the outside face of the coping over the anchor clips and rotate it into place, then press downward until the snap lock occurs.
  10. Completion: continue installing coping with a 3/8-in. space at splice joints for thermal expansion, field cutting where necessary with a fine-tooth hacksaw or snips, and remove the protective film immediately.

Clip fasteners go in the third full hole from the bend, and in one of the first five holes from the drip. The installing contractor checks as-built conditions, including nailer attachment, and the manufacturer's coping details for fit to the wall assembly before fabrication.

Testing and wind warranty

Other Perma-Tite coping versions are tested to ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1, FM Approved for wind uplift and Miami-Dade County approved. The double tapered version carries no testing and no FM or Miami-Dade approval.

For Perma-Tite Double Tapered Coping, a 20-year, 120 mph Perma-Tite Wind Warranty is available on orders that call for it. The period of twenty years runs from the date of final acceptance. Metal-Era replaces or repairs the portion of the coping or roof edge system that has failed because of a defect in Metal-Era supplied materials, and its obligation over the life of the warranty is limited to the owner's original cost of the system.

  • Perma-Tite Fascia Systems and Perma-Tite Coping Systems are the only warranted products.
  • All accessories must be manufactured by Metal-Era.
  • The owner gives written notice within thirty days of discovering a failure.
  • The warranty does not apply to damage from wind over 120 miles per hour, flying debris or natural disasters, to failure from separation of the wood nailer substrate from the building, to negligence or misuse, to use of metal work not furnished by Metal-Era, or to installation that departs from Metal-Era's specifications and printed instructions.
