Overview
Perma-Tite Gold Coping is a metal parapet coping from the Perma-Tite family of Metal-Era. The cover snaps down over anchor clips fastened to the top of the wall, so no fasteners are exposed and no crimping is done. Covers are supplied in 12'-0" lengths, and the pre-punched, slotted fastening holes in the clips allow for thermal movement. No adhesives are used.
Three versions are made: tapered, flat and existing slope. All three use the same 16-gauge galvanized anchor clips, the same 8-inch concealed splice plates and the same range of cover materials. Radius versions of each are also made, in quicklock and welded construction.
The coping caps the parapet where the roof membrane terminates, and it is one of the perimeter metal components used to finish low-slope roof assemblies. Gold is the version of the Perma-Tite line that carries the lifetime, 215 mph wind warranty and the higher ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 test pressures described below.
Versions and wall sizes
The tapered, flat and existing slope versions share one set of size limits. The existing slope version is drawn for a wall top that already has a rise, called the substrate condition on its print approval.
- Actual wall size: 3 1/2 in. minimum and 39 7/8 in. maximum, with testing carried out up to a 32-in. wall.
- Outside face: 3 1/2 in. minimum and 12 in. maximum, tested to 12 in.
- Inside face: 2 3/4 in. minimum and 12 in. maximum, tested to 4 in.
- A 3/8-in. space is provided in each cover for variations in the wall.
For Perma-Tite Gold Coping, covers are ordered by stretch-out, the flat width of metal needed to form the profile:
- Category I: 0 in. to 9.75 in.
- Category II: over 9.75 in. to 13.75 in.
- Category III: over 13.75 in. to 21.75 in.
- Category IV: over 21.75 in. to 29.75 in.
- Category V: over 29.75 in. to 45.75 in.
- Category VI: over 45.75 in. to 69.75 in.
On walls wider than 14 in. the anchor clips use a separate clip profile. Custom-fabricated sizes are also offered.

Cover materials and finishes
Covers are made in five standard materials:
- 24-gauge galvanized steel
- 22-gauge galvanized steel
- .040-in. aluminum
- .050-in. aluminum
- .063-in. aluminum
Oil canning, a visible waviness in flat metal, can occur on larger face heights and wall widths. For a face height over 8 in. or a wall width over 12 in., 22-gauge steel or .050-in. or .063-in. aluminum is recommended. The 24-gauge steel and .040-in. aluminum covers are available for wall sizes of 3.5 in. to 24 in. only.
On Perma-Tite Gold Coping, coil-coated standard colors carry a 30-year Kynar 500 finish warranty. For Perma-Tite Gold Coping, ten express colors are offered: Dark Bronze, Bone White, Cityscape, Almond, Medium Bronze, Sandstone, Sierra Tan, Slate Gray, Stone White and Clear Anodized. Express colors apply to 24 gauge, .040 in. and .050 in. only. Mill finish is also available.
On Perma-Tite Gold Coping, custom post-coated Kynar 500 colors include a 10-year Kynar 500 finish warranty, and a 20-year warranty is available on request. Anodized finishes carry a 5-year warranty. No warranty is available for coil anodized finishing, and post-coat Class 1 batch anodized can be raised from 5 years to 10 years for an upcharge.
Anchor clips, splice plates and fasteners
Each anchor clip is 12 in. wide and formed from 16-gauge galvanized steel, with a corrosion-resistant stainless-steel spring attached at the factory. The spring provides long-term, positive spring loading of the cover. Clip spacing is determined by Metal-Era from the wall size. For straight lengths:
- Walls 0 in. through 16 in.: 4 ft. 0 in. on center.
- Walls 16 1/16 in. through 24 in.: 3 ft. 0 in. on center.
- Walls 24 1/16 in. through 39 7/8 in.: 2 ft. 0 in. on center.
All radius coping has double-spring anchor clips, with clip width set by the radius size and material.
Each joint is backed by an 8-in.-wide concealed splice plate with factory-applied dual non-curing sealant strips, which seals the joint and allows for thermal movement of the covers. Splice plates are provided for every joint, and covers are set with a 3/8-in. space at each splice joint for thermal expansion.
All fasteners are provided, matched to the substrate:
- Wood: #10 x 1-1/2-in. stainless-steel screw for the top fasteners.
- Masonry: 1/4 x 1-1/4-in. Tapcon.
- Metal: #12-14 x 1-in. TEK3.
- Face fasteners on all three substrates: #14 x 1-1/2-in. Profiler.
If no substrate is given, wood fasteners are provided. Alternative or universal fasteners of equal or greater equivalency may be supplied in place of those listed, based on availability.
Wind testing and approvals
Perma-Tite Gold Coping is tested to the ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 standard, the roof-edge wind test used to comply with the International Building Code. The print approvals for the tapered, flat and existing slope versions give test pressures up to 297 psf horizontal and 513 psf vertical. The maximum tested dimensions are a 12-in. outside face, a 4-in. inside face and a 32-in. wall width.
The coping, including the radius versions, is Factory Mutual approved for wind uplift protection and carries the FM Approved mark. It is Miami-Dade approved (23-0912.08 (12/11/28)) to comply with the High Velocity Hurricane Zone of the Florida Building Code.
Miters, endcaps and accessories
Miters and accessories are factory fabricated, which removes the need for field fabrication. The standard accessories are:
- left and right endcaps;
- inside and outside 90-degree miters;
- left and right endwall flashings, each in a coping version and a splice plate version.
Unless otherwise noted, miters and accessories are made with a non-penetrating quicklock joint and factory sealed watertight. Welded construction carries a surcharge and requires a minimum material thickness of .050-in. aluminum. Non-90-degree miters have a separate print approval.
Additional accessories include:
- transition miters and straight transition miters, with or without capped ends;
- inside and outside T miters, Z miters and step-up miters;
- peak and valley miters and the Space Maker outside coping miter;
- pilaster caps;
- radius coping and arched coping.
Radius coping
Radius coping is made in tapered, flat and existing slope versions, each in quicklock and welded construction. Each radius is supplied in 4'-0" lengths and the radius is given either as an actual known radius or from field condition measurements.
- Quicklock radius: 24-gauge steel, .040-in. aluminum, .050-in. aluminum or .063-in. aluminum, with a non-penetrating quicklock joint, factory sealed watertight.
- Welded radius: .080-in. aluminum on top and .063-in. aluminum on the sides.
Concealed splice plates with factory-applied dual non-curing sealant strips are provided with both. The wall, outside face and inside face limits match those of the straight versions. Fabrication proceeds only after receipt of a signed print approval.
Installation sequence
The roof membrane is positioned on top of the wall, covering the treated wood nailer or substrate completely, with 1/2 in. minimum excess membrane beyond the nailer where applicable, an NRCA requirement. Miters are installed first. The steps are numbered as follows:
- Corner support clips: locate and fasten the galvanized corner support clip to the wall.
- Miter splice plates and anchor clips: remove the release paper from the splice plate sealant strips, position the splice plate in the center of the anchor clip, and install the assemblies halfway into each end of the corner miter.
- Miter: place the corner assembly into position and secure it at the exposed edge of the anchor clips.
- Endcap anchor clips: locate and fasten galvanized anchor clips to the wall.
- Endcap splice plate: remove the release paper from the top of the sealant strips and place the splice plate onto the second anchor clip.
- Endcap: hook the outside face over the anchor clips, rotate into place and press the rear leg downward until snap lock occurs.
- Endwall flashing, coping versions: two anchor clips are used, one with a splice plate, and the endcap is hooked and snapped in place.
- Endwall flashing: fasten to the wall and apply non-curing sealant to the caulk cup at the top of the flange; fasteners and sealant are by others.
- Endwall flashing, splice plate version: one anchor clip is used; the flashing sits on top of the clip after the release paper is removed, and is fastened to the wall.
- Coping: hook the outside face over the anchor clip and rotate into place until snap lock occurs.
- Anchor clips: locate over the membrane and fasten to the wall on center.
- Splice plates: place onto the anchor clips at splice joints, removing the release paper from the sealant strips.
- Coping: hook the outside face over the anchor clips, rotate into place and press down until snap lock occurs.
- Completion: continue with a 3/8-in. space at splice joints. Field cutting is done with a fine tooth hacksaw, snips or cut-off wheel, leaving a clean edge.
The protective plastic film is removed immediately after each piece is installed. Radius coping has its own three steps: anchor clips, splice plates and coping cover, installed from left to right, with a 3/8-in. space at each joint.
Wind warranty
The Perma-Tite Gold wind warranty is a lifetime, 215 mph warranty, available on orders placed to meet a project's specification. It provides a maximum of Limited Lifetime, 215 mph coverage for the repair or replacement of any portion of the roof edge system that has failed due to a defect in Metal-Era supplied materials. The finish warranties described above are separate.
