A dated Varco Pruden Panel Rib roof section

This record describes the Varco Pruden Buildings Panel Rib Roof as shown in its FLPRROOF1 revision 2 structural roof-panel drawing dated January 15, 2014. Miami-Dade notice 14-0123.12 approved that 24-gauge steel assembly on March 20, 2014; the notice expired March 7, 2019. The drawing is a particularly useful replacement reference because it includes the complete 36-inch covering width, the repeated ribs and pan grooves, enlarged details at both panel edges, and the side-lap arrangement. Panel Rib is a named Varco Pruden roof system, not a generic description of every exposed-fastener R-panel. Giving the drawing number and revision to a supplier keeps a replacement inquiry tied to a real production generation.

Varco Pruden still presents Panel Rib as a roof product, and the image on this page is an official contemporary view of that family. The dated section controls the dimensions discussed here. A replacement request should identify both that dated drawing and the roof from which the old sheet came. The manufacturer drawing labels the panel 1 3/16 inches by 36 inches, while its installed cover is 36 inches across three 12-inch major-rib modules. The original single-page drawing is retained inside the archived approval PDF in the file section, alongside the current manufacturer product sheet and a concise ordering sheet prepared for this profile.

How to read the 2014 section

The large ribs rise 1 3/16 inches from the pan and repeat at 12-inch centers. Their sloped webs carry a 60-degree typical callout in the enlarged left-edge detail. The small recessed features between the large ribs are part of the section, not surface decoration: detail B marks 39/64 inch to each side of the centerline of the recessed flat and 3/32-inch returns at its shoulders. Across a 12-inch major module the upper dimension chain shows 1 11/32 inches at either end and two spans of 4 21/32 inches. These equal one 12-inch repeat and locate the major and intermediate features relative to each other. The two named edge details show why a nominal 36-inch panel from another mill may still fail to nest with an existing roof.

The left-edge detail includes the folded overlap return, the major crest made from two half-inch flat segments, and smaller fractional-inch offsets that determine how the joint sits. Detail C shows the opposite edge, where the major rib approaches a formed end lip. The right tip is labeled with one-eighth-inch minimum and five-sixteenths-inch maximum callouts. A supplier should read the whole A, B and C sequence on FLPRROOF1 before comparing tooling. The sheet also gives dimensional tolerance of 0.0313 inch, angle tolerance of two degrees, and an inside radius of 0.125 inch. Those printed limits belong to this archived drawing; they provide a concrete comparison against a trial panel rather than a promise of fit from a similar-looking catalog sketch.

The purlin-bearing edge and side lap

The 2014 Varco Pruden drawing identifies a purlin-bearing edge on one side of the sheet. Its RC03B7 side-lap detail brings the adjacent panel over the major rib and identifies an anti-capillary bead in the joint. This is the edge pair to document when a roof has lost individual sheets or needs a light-transmitting replacement. Photograph both faces of a sound panel end and label the over-lap and under-lap edges before removing it. A straight-on section photograph should show the full 36-inch cover, all three major-rib modules, the shallow intermediate grooves and the two return folds. Roof photographs alone cannot reveal a folded edge concealed beneath the neighboring sheet.

The same drawing lists a 42 3/4-inch blank width for the 24-gauge sheet. That is the flat starting width for the documented roll-formed geometry; it is different from the 36-inch width that covers the roof after overlap. The recorded maximum panel length is 41 feet. When measuring an existing roof, take the ordered length from the actual eave, ridge and end-lap conditions rather than treating the 41-foot historic maximum as the required length. Note the location of purlins and any cutouts, and include a section of the neighboring sheet if the original lap is damaged. A fabricator can then quote around the actual connection instead of guessing which edge is under the joint.

Historic steel specification and a metal replacement

The archived approval describes a structural steel roof panel with a 0.022-inch minimum material thickness and references 24-gauge steel in the drawing data block. That steel thickness, the blank width and the dimension tolerances describe the reviewed 2014 generation. A new metal quote should ask for a material gauge and coating that suit the present roof and project, and the supplier should state which of those specifications it can provide. Include the number of sheets, finished sheet length, desired finish and color, roof location, slope, and whether a trial section is needed. Give the shop the one-page profile summary, the complete archived drawing and an undamaged physical offcut wherever available.

The current Varco Pruden product sheet confirms that Panel Rib remains a named purlin-bearing roof system with a 36-inch panel width and exposed fasteners. It also lists 22-, 24- and 26-gauge offerings and a half-inch-per-foot minimum slope for the current product. These current product choices do not identify the exact folds in the 2014 side lap. For an older building, a supplier's sample should be compared with the dated A and C edges, the 60-degree web and the intermediate grooves before lengths are ordered. The built-up metal roof installation service explains how a profile survey, roof support review and replacement-sheet sequence can be coordinated for a working metal roof.

Requesting a matching GRP or fiberglass sheet

A translucent GRP replacement is a separate quote from the metal sheet. Send the fiberglass manufacturer the 2014 section, both enlarged edge details and a sound metal sample, then specify the required light transmission or opacity, color, nominal laminate thickness, length, quantity and delivery point. The producer needs to compare its available patterns with the purlin-bearing edge and folded overlap, not only the 36-inch cover and 12-inch rib pitch. The shallow pan grooves and 60-degree major web are also part of the match. The steel approval gives the old metal geometry; the fiberglass maker will provide its own material, span and installation information for the proposed GRP sheet.

Dipcraft Manufacturing is a US fiberglass producer that asks customers to send sketches of existing corrugated panels and considers custom shapes according to available tooling and production quantity. The one-page ordering PDF gives it a compact dimensional starting point, while the 2014 Varco Pruden drawing and a field sample supply the joint details. Ask for a trial GRP section or documented pattern comparison before requesting a full roof run. Record the finished length, panel count, light-transmission requirement, laminate thickness and proposed fastening method in the inquiry. A metal roll-former in Texas can price the steel replacement through a separate request using the same historic drawing package.

For a fiberglass match, request a profile review from Dipcraft Manufacturing.

Five Texas metal-sheet quotation routes

A Panel Rib inquiry can be sent to five metal-roofing operations in different Texas regions with the same source package. Metal Warehouse in Sherman lists PBR roof sheets formed to order in North Texas. Xtreme Metals describes in-house panel production near Flint and Tyler in East Texas. Quality Metals identifies PBR roof panels and regional roll-forming at its San Antonio facility. Lucid Metal Works in Houston advertises R-panel and roofing-metal fabrication for the Gulf Coast, while All Precision Metals in El Paso lists roll-formed R-panel sheets in West Texas. Their public capabilities make them practical contacts for a measured custom inquiry; the 2014 Varco Pruden side-lap drawing is the part each shop must compare with its die.

Send all five contacts the same 36-inch-cover profile sheet, the archived FLPRROOF1 PDF, photographs of both existing edges, and the required finished sheet length. Ask for a response that identifies the shop's actual roll profile, crest and groove dimensions, side-lap hand, metal gauge, coating and available length. A short formed sample will show whether the roof's old under-lap and over-lap can be joined to new stock. If an existing sheet has already been removed, include the cleanest full-width cross-section with marks showing exterior face and roof direction. The Texas options below cover the metal inquiry, while the fiberglass contact above handles the GRP inquiry.
