Overview
The 2-Piece Counterflashing is a Metal-Era system made of a receiver and a snap-on counterflashing cover. The cover is installed by hooking it onto the receiver and rotating it into place, and it can be taken apart for roof repairs. The surface-mounted and reglet versions provide a watertight termination at the leading edge of the roofing material. The thru-wall version provides a watertight termination at the leading edge and inside of the wall and is used for new construction.
Metal-Era groups the 2-piece counterflashing with its accessories. Its range is organized by roof membrane type, from EPDM, TPO and PVC to built-up and modified, the roofing found in flat roofing systems.
Versions and size categories
Three versions are made. Each is available in a standard 5 in. face height and is sold in four size categories.
- Thru wall (CFTHRUWALL-500R): Cat I, 0 to 2 1/2 in.; Cat II, 2 1/2 to 6 1/2 in.; Cat III, 6 1/2 to 14 1/2 in.; Cat IV, 14 1/2 to 26 1/2 in.
- Surface mounted (CFWA2-500R), flange categories: Cat I, 0 to 1 7/8 in.; Cat II, 1 7/8 to 4 1/4 in.; Cat III, 4 1/4 to 8 1/4 in.; Cat IV, 8 1/4 to 16 1/4 in.
- Reglet (CFRA2-500R), flange categories: Cat I, 0 to 1 1/8 in.; Cat II, 1 1/8 to 3 1/2 in.; Cat III, 3 1/2 to 7 1/2 in.; Cat IV, 7 1/2 to 15 1/2 in.
The versions differ in how the receiver is held to the wall. The thru-wall receiver is installed onto the wall with brick placed atop it, the surface-mounted receiver is fastened to the face of the wall, and the reglet receiver sits in a 1 in. deep sawcut or mortar joint.

Materials and finishes
Covers are manufactured in 24-gauge galvanized steel and in .040-in. and .050-in. aluminum.
Coil-coated standard colors have a 30-year Kynar 500 finish warranty, and custom post-coated Kynar 500 colors have a 10-year finish warranty that can be extended to 20 years on request. Anodized finishes carry a 5-year warranty, with no warranty on coil-anodized material and an option to raise post-coat Class 1 batch anodizing to 10 years. Express colors are offered in 24-gauge steel and .040-in. and .050-in. aluminum, the three materials this cover is made in.
Design features
Covers are supplied in 12 ft. lengths with pre-punched, notched holes. The fastening holes are slotted to allow thermal movement of the materials and to place fasteners correctly. Lap joints are pre-notched, with a 3 in. lap.
The counterflashing can be removed and reinstalled at any time without compromising its strength and appearance. Specially fabricated products can also be ordered.
The receiver ends are also notched at the factory, and adjoining receiver pieces lap 3 in. at the notched end. Both the receiver and the counterflashing leave the factory with a protective film that is peeled off during installation. The surface-mounted receiver is pre-punched with slots at 12 in. on center for its fasteners.
Thru-wall installation
The thru-wall version is installed in four steps.
- Reglet receiver: the receiver is installed onto the wall a minimum of 7 in. above the high point of the cant strip, if a cant strip is used, working from right to left. The receiver ends lap 3 in. at the factory-notched end, and the protective film is removed immediately.
- Counterflashing: the protective film is removed from the counterflashing, which is hooked onto the receiver and rotated downward into place. Receiver and counterflashing joints are staggered.
- Lap joints: at each lap joint the counterflashing is hooked onto the receiver, slid 3 in. over the previously installed piece and rotated into place.
- Completion: brick is placed atop the reglet receiver.
The roof flashing and the cant strip are supplied by others.
Surface-mounted installation
The surface-mounted version is installed in four steps, numbered as in the maker's instruction drawing 11115-24426 (rev. B, 02/13/17).
- Reglet receiver: the wall-mounted receiver is set true and level a minimum of 7 in. above the high point of the cant strip, if a cant strip is used, and installed from right to left. It is fastened with appropriate fasteners, supplied by others, through the pre-punched slots at 12 in. on center. Receiver ends lap 3 in. at the factory-notched end, and the protective film is removed immediately.
- Counterflashing: the protective film is removed, the counterflashing is hooked onto the receiver and rotated downward into place, and receiver and counterflashing joints are staggered.
- Counterflashing at lap joints: after the film is removed and the piece is hooked onto the receiver, it slides 3 in. over the previously installed piece at the lap joint, the notch in the cover marking the lap, and rotates downward into place as in step 2.
- Completion: a continuous bead of high grade architectural sealant is applied in the caulk cup of the reglet.
The roof flashing, the cant strip, the fasteners and the sealant are supplied by others.
Reglet installation
The reglet version is installed in four steps, numbered as in the maker's instruction drawing 11115-24428 (rev. C, 02/06/17).
- Reglet receiver: the receiver is installed into a 1 in. deep sawcut or mortar joint. The sawcut is cut true and level a minimum of 7 in. above the high point of the cant strip, if a cant strip is used, and installation runs from right to left. Reglet ends lap 3 in. at the factory-notched end, and the protective film is removed immediately.
- Counterflashing: before installation the protective film is removed. The counterflashing is hooked onto the receiver, rotated downward into place, and the receiver and counterflashing joints are staggered.
- Counterflashing at lap joints: the film is removed, the piece is hooked onto the receiver and slid 3 in. at the lap joint over the previously installed piece, then rotated downward into place as in step 2. The cover has a 3 in. notch for the lap.
- Completion: a continuous bead of high grade architectural sealant is applied in the caulk cup of the reglet to complete the installation.
The roof flashing, the cant strip and the sealant are supplied by others.
