Overview
Creative Design Cornice Coping is the cornice-profile version of Metal-Era's Creative Design Series coping, a snap-on metal cap for the top of a parapet wall. It gives the roof edge a simple cornice profile. The cover is supplied in 12-ft. lengths, snaps over anchor clips fastened to the wall, and needs no crimping. No adhesives are used.
The Creative Design Series also includes Bold Face, Bullnose, Reveal, Leak-Tite and Stone-Look versions, each with its own size range and materials. This page covers the Cornice version only. Coping of this kind finishes the edge of a parapet where the roof membrane is turned up and over the wall, and it is one of the perimeter components used with low-slope commercial roof systems.
Pre-punched fastening holes in the anchor clips are slotted to allow for thermal movement. Metal-Era sets the anchor clip spacing, and clips are set at 3-ft. centers.
Sizes and dimensions
The Cornice version is made to these ranges:
- Outside face: 7 in. to 12 in.
- Inside face: 2.25 in. to 6 in.
- Wall size: 5 in. to 24 in.
A 3/8-in. space is provided in the cover to allow for variations in the actual wall size.
Covers are priced and ordered by stretch-out, the flat width of metal needed to form the profile. Five categories are used: Category I covers a stretch-out of over 0 in. to 9.25 in., Category II over 9.25 in. to 17.25 in., Category III over 17.25 in. to 23.25 in., Category IV over 23.25 in. to 41.25 in. and Category V over 41.25 in. to 65.25 in.
The other Creative Design versions differ in range. Leak-Tite, for example, runs from a 3.5-in. to a 16-in. wall, and Stone-Look from a 5-in. to a 32-in. wall.

Materials and finishes
The design of the Cornice version allows covers to be made in two aluminum thicknesses, and steel is offered in one gauge:
- 22-gauge galvanized steel
- .050-in. aluminum
- .063-in. aluminum
The 24-gauge steel and .040-in. aluminum options belong to other Creative Design versions, such as Bold Face and Leak-Tite, and are not offered on the Cornice cover.
For Creative Design Cornice Coping, standard colors are coil-coated with Kynar 500 and carry a 30-year finish warranty. On Creative Design Cornice Coping, custom post-coated Kynar 500 colors include a 10-year finish warranty, and a 20-year warranty is available on request. Ten express colors are stocked: Dark Bronze, Bone White, Cityscape, Almond, Medium Bronze, Sandstone, Sierra Tan, Slate Gray, Stone White and Clear Anodized. All colors are also available in a mill finish.
Anodized finishes carry a 5-year warranty. Coil-anodized material has no finish warranty. Post-coat Class 1 batch anodizing carries a 5-year warranty, with an option to raise it to 10 years for an upcharge.
Anchor clips, splice plates and fasteners
Anchor clips are 12 in. wide and formed from 20-gauge galvanized steel. Corrosion-resistant stainless-steel springs are attached to the clips at the factory and give the cover positive spring loading once it is snapped on.
Each joint between 12-ft. cover lengths is backed by an 8-in.-wide concealed splice plate with two factory-applied strips of non-curing butyl sealant. The plates seal the joint and let the metal move with temperature changes.
Fasteners are provided with the coping, matched to the wall substrate named on the order: wood, masonry or metal. Where no substrate is given, wood-substrate fasteners are supplied. For Creative Design Cornice Coping, fasteners must be corrosion resistant and rated for a minimum 250 lb. pullout force in the substrate being used.
Miters, endcaps and accessories
Factory-fabricated miters replace field fabrication at corners and transitions. All accessories for this version are welded, and miters and accessories are not available with quicklock joints. On Creative Design Cornice Coping, welded accessories require a minimum material thickness of .050 in.
The 90-degree print approval covers outside miters, inside miters, right endcaps and left endcaps, all welded. Separate print approvals cover:
- non-90-degree miters, with a measurement worksheet for use without a protractor;
- step-up coping miters;
- the Space Maker outside coping miter;
- straight coping transitions, with and without capped ends;
- peak and valley miters;
- inside T miters and outside T miters;
- inside and outside coping miters with endcaps;
- Z coping miters, in right-hand and left-hand versions;
- transition coping miters;
- pilaster caps.
Installation sequence
The roof membrane is positioned on top of the wall, covering the treated wood nailers or substrate completely, with a minimum of 1/2 in. of excess membrane beyond the nailer where applicable. Miters are the first items to install. The steps run as follows:
- Step 1, corner support clips: an 8-in.-wide galvanized corner support clip is fastened to one side of the wall, halfway into each end of the corner.
- Step 2, miter splice plates and anchor clips: the splice plate is positioned in the center of the anchor clip, and the splice plate and anchor clip assembly is installed halfway into the corner.
- Step 3, miter: the outside face of the miter assembly is hooked onto the corner clip and rotated into place, then secured as shown in Detail A.
- Step 4, endcap anchor clips: galvanized anchor clips are located and fastened to the wall with the fasteners provided for the substrate, with the fastener in the third full hole from the bend.
- Step 5, endcap splice plate: the release paper is removed from the factory-applied sealant strips and the splice plate is placed halfway into the endcap.
- Step 6, endcap: the coping is positioned over the anchor clips and pressed down until the outside face clears the clip, then the outside face and inside face are each pushed down until the snap lock occurs.
- Step 7, anchor clips: galvanized anchor clips are fastened to the wall at 3-ft. centers.
- Step 8, splice plates: the release paper is removed from the sealant strips and a splice plate is placed halfway into one end of each 12-ft. length of coping.
- Step 9, coping: the cover is engaged outside face first, then the inside face, until the snap lock occurs. Coping continues with a 3/8-in. space at splice joints for thermal expansion, and is field cut with a fine-tooth hacksaw or snips where necessary.
- Step 10, completion: the protective film is removed immediately.
On an EIFS wall, the cover is fastened through the face with a fastener long enough to penetrate the nailer.
Wind warranty
The Creative Design Series 20-Year, 120 MPH Wind Warranty is available on orders to meet a project's specification. It provides a maximum of 20 years and 120 mph of coverage for the repair or replacement of any portion of the roof edge system that has failed because of a defect in Metal-Era supplied materials. The finish warranties described above are separate. The Cornice version carries no ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435/ES-1 wind test rating, no FM approval and no Miami-Dade County approval.
